Valentine’s Day in Phase Three of a Pandemic

Valentine’s Day used to be much simpler. You would make a plan, book your reservations, buy your tickets, and be ready to roll. But how do you bring home romance in a pandemic?

For some, Valentine’s Day is just a ploy to sell cards, but culturally, it’s how Americans measure where they are in their relationships– puppy love, still in love, forever in love, or if the love has gone out of everything. It’s OK to be cynical about it, but Valentine’s Day exists and matters to most people.

Bremerton used to have a lot more to do for Valentine’s Day. But the pandemic has narrowed our options. There’s less to do with Harborside Fountain Park’s fountains down for repairs and Kitsap Forest Theater closed for the winter season. Some of the most exciting restaurants closed down in the pandemic, and with Omicron on the loose, it might be wise to avoid being out in public. And some couples will be dealing with a quarantined partner this Valentine’s Day, as well.

But if you have a little imagination and a lot of love, there are lots of fun ways to make this Valentine’s Day the most memorable one yet for you and your partner. Here are four suggestions for having a romantic Valentine’s Day evening without going out of your own home.

Find a Lush cocktail and give your partner a spa experience. A Lush ‘cocktail’ is a series of bath products that combine as a system. The idea is to pick scents that your partner likes or pick scents you like on your partner. (A Lush employee can help you out with a selection, and there are forums for this kind of thing if you want to order it all online!)

Have a dinner/dessert trade-off with your partner. The better partner in the kitchen makes dinner, and the other partner does dessert, cooking each other’s favorite foods. If you’re both disasters in the kitchen, thank your lucky stars there exists DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats!

Prom Night at Home. Surprise your partner with a matching corsage/boutonniere and instruct them to dress up. Make a bowl of spiked punch. Put on some classic slow dance tunes (don’t forget “Always & Forever” by Heat Wave!) and some disco lights to complete the experience.

Make it a game night. Play couples games to improve your intimacy with each other! Games like Icebreaker and Create the Love can help you get more profound for the night.

We hope this Valentine’s Day will be a wonderful experience for you and your partner. Don’t forget to show your car a little love, too!
